Matthew 15:2-3, 8
2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?
for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3But he answered
and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the
commandment of God by your tradition?. . .
8This people draweth nigh unto me with their
mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
The body is made to train itself to do tasks that are repeated over and over again, without being conscious of what it is actually doing. This feature of the body is very helpful for riding a bike, because after learning to ride, the body no longer has to consciously try to balance itself; it does it automatically. This feature may also get us into trouble in our Christian walk. For example, how often do you actually think about what you're saying when you pray before a meal? The same thing happens in our church services, Bible reading, and prayer life. We inadvertently learn to do these things without thought, causing us to draw close to God with our mouth without our heart coming close at all. Maybe we need to look closely at our traditions and find ways to keep them fresh and renewed, so our mouths can follow our hearts as we draw closer to God.
